School of Advanced Study, University of London, Cassal Bursary (French and Francophone Studies)

This bursary, made available by the Cassal Endowment Fund, is available to master's students intending to write their dissertation on a topic related to French or Francophone studies. In 2018-19, two bursaries of £7,500 will be available. All MA, MRes and LLM degrees offered by the School are eligible for the bursary.

Eligibility and How to Apply

This Master’s Bursary, made available by the Cassal Endowment Fund, is designed to support a student wishing to pursue a master’s course at the School of Advanced Study (SAS), and who intends to write their dissertation on a topic related to French or Francophone studies. Within the School’s institutes there is scope for undertaking interdisciplinary research with a French or Francophone focus in areas of specialisation such as the visual arts, history, contemporary literature, theatre and performance, the Caribbean, refugee law. All MA, MRes and LLM degrees offered by the School are eligible for the bursary.

The scholarship provides the successful applicant with a fixed amount of £7,500 (in the case of part-time spread across two years of study) to be used firstly to waive the fees; the remaining sum, if any, will be awarded to the student. In 2018-19 it is expected that two bursaries will be awarded.

Eligibility: The primary criterion on which applications are judged is academic merit. The successful applicant will be of exceptional quality, evidenced by previous academic achievement at undergraduate level, with an outstanding mark achieved in the final-year project/dissertation. Successful applicants will have a genuine and demonstrable interest in undertaking a master’s degree at the School of Advanced Study. Awards are open to students who are:

  • Self-funded and domiciled in the UK, the EU or overseas.
  • Studying full-time or part-time for a maximum of two years
  • Intending to write their dissertation on a topic related to French or Francophone studies.
