(1) Une réflexion sur la « catastrophe naturelle » telle qu’elle est appréhendée dans les sciences humaines et les sciences naturelles ;

(2) Une réflexion sur les modalités et les objets d’une écocritique de la catastrophe naturelle située à l’intersection des sciences humaines et des sciences naturelles ;

Ecocriticism, a plural field of inquiry exploring relationships between human productions (especially esthetic) and the environment, interests greater and greater numbers of  French-speaking researchers. Whether from a socio-, ethno- or geopoetic perspective, an inter- or trans-media approach, and/or a historical view of representations and knowledge, ecocriticism exceeds the area of literary studies stricto sensu to engage anthropology, philosophy, and other areas of the human sciences. In this context, ever more scholars are moving into a research area whose pertinence increases directly with the environmental anxiety that marks our era.

This colloquium seeks to shed light on interdisciplinary potentialities that characterize ecocriticism, by addressing one of its salient dimensions through recent corpus, objects, and conceptual tools : the dialogue between human sciences and natural sciences. With this aim in mind, we will focus on the notion of « natural catastrophe » that is at the heart of the current I-Site Clermont Auvergne project (https://cap2025.fr/).

            We therefore aim to develop a comparative perspective on interactions between human societies and natural catastrophes, by focusing on an emblematic space and period : the Atlantic world (Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean) and the 20th and 21st centuries. Sufficiently vast to bring different perspectives and disciplines into dialogue, the space of the Atlantic constitutes an essential terrain for cultural and scientific history in the European languages. In this multilingual framework, the period of the 20th and 21st centuries not only corresponds to the transnational and transoceanic development of ecocriticism and of science research on natural catastrophes, but also coincides with an increasingly clear interest in problematizing the typically Western opposition between nature and culture.

Proposals could take up any of the following three lines of inquiry (which are not mutually exclusive), permitting grouping of case studies emerging from different disciplines and/or inclusion of cross-disciplinary approaches :

(1) A reflection on « natural catastrophe » as understood in the human sciences and the natural sciences ;

(2) A reflection on the modalities and objects of an ecocritique of natural catastrophe situated at the intersection of the human sciences and the natural sciences ;

(3) A reflection on conditions for existence and representations of a truly natural catastrophe in the Anthropocene era.

The colloquium will additionally provide the framework collectively to create an exhaustive inter- and transdisciplinary critical bibliography around the notion of « natural catastrophe », which at present is missing from the European university landscape and which the published proceedings will be able to circulate.

A title and a summary of approximately 200 words (10-15 lines), in French or English, along with a short bio-bibliographical statement, should be submitted before 15 November 2019 to following address : catastrophe.naturelle2020@lilo.org.

Proposals for workshops and/or roundtables integrating ideas from participants are equally welcome.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
