Panel “Re-viewing, re-imagining regional waters in word and image

(Northern Atlantic Arc)”

In a context marked by the revival of European regionalisms, this panel will examine the emergence of local sea imaginaries and discourses and the part these play in constructing or reconstructing regional maritime identities in the Northern regions of the Atlantic Arc.

It will focus on the verbovisual strategies developed by artists, local authorities and activists from the peripheral maritime regions of the Northern Atlantic Arc (Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, the West Fjords of Iceland…) in order to re-view, reclaim and de-idealize their coastal landscapes and maritime cultural heritage.

Of special interest will be the representation of regional waters as a means of re-empowering local communities and re-imagining a sensus communis gathered around the need for a reconfiguration of both traditional and non-traditional, local and global paradigms of identity.

The panel will welcome contributions of 20 min. each in French and English that tackle the modus operandi of intermedial apparatuses and cross-media practices such as photo-texts, film-poems, video-literature and promotional posters, with a view to examining how the constant negotiation between images, texts and contexts can help us rethink our relationship to the sea as local resource and cultural practice.

Contributors may for instance address the following issues:

• regional waters in photo-texts, film-poems and promotional apparatuses;
• the sea, its currents, waves and tides in words and images as a means of rethinking our experience and sense of place, reviving regional cultures and reconfiguring the relationship between national and subnational identities;
• the re-aestheticization of traditional fishing techniques in word and image;
• anthropocentric vs. ecocentric representations of regional waters in word and image;
• writing and imaging regional waters, coastal areas and beaches as aesthetic and political process, as a means of challenging binary oppositions such as nature/culture, land/sea, landscape/architecture, localism/globalization…
• the regional waters in word and image as reinvention of “the permanent present” (Hartog, 2003).

Atelier « Imaginaires maritimes et régionalismes côtiers dans le texte et l’image (Arc Atlantique Nord) »

Cet atelier s’intéressera à l’émergence d’imaginaires maritimes régionaux et au rôle que jouent ces derniers dans l’invention ou réinvention des identités côtières régionales dans l’Arc Atlantique Nord, dans un contexte marqué par la montée des régionalismes européens.

Il s’agira d’examiner les stratégies verbovisuelles d’artistes, autorités locales et activistes issus de régions maritimes telles que la Bretagne, l’Ecosse, l’Irlande, l’Irlande, les fjords de l’Ouest de l’Islande etc. pour (se) représenter et dé-idéaliser paysages côtiers et patrimoine culturel maritime au moyen de dispositifs inter- ou pluri-médiaux engageant le texte, l’image et, le cas échéant, le son.

L’accent sera mis sur la façon dont ces représentations permettent aux populations locales de se valoriser en tant que communautés et de reconfigurer leur image entre tradition et innovation en conciliant les paradigmes identitaires portés d’une part par le régionalisme et de l’autre par la mondialisation.

L’atelier accueillera des contributions (20 min.) en français et en anglais portant sur le mode opératoire de dispositifs intermédiaux promotionnels et/ou artistiques (photo-textes, film-poèmes, etc.), dans le but d’identifier la façon dont le dialogue ou trialogue entre image, texte et contexte envisage la mer non plus seulement comme une ressource, mais également comme un réservoir de pratiques et d’affirmations culturelles.

Les axes suivants pourront ainsi être explorés (liste non exhaustive) :

• mer et régionalisme dans les photo-textes, film-poèmes et dispositifs promotionnels
• mer, courants, vagues et marées dans le texte-image : du sentiment d’appartenance au dialogue entre identités nationales et régionales
• ré-esthétisation des techniques de pêche traditionnelles dans le texte et l’image
• représentation des eaux régionales dans le texte et l’image : entre anthropocentrisme et écocentrisme ; nature et culture ; terre et mer, paysage et architecture ; régionalisme et mondialisation
• (se) représenter les identités côtières régionales : un enjeu politique ?
• Mer, régionalisme et la réinvention d’un « présent permanent » (Hartog, 2003)
