International Conference

Race, Identity and Globalization in Southern Africa and Beyond

University of Gaborone, Botswana, 22,23,24 February 2019

This symposium is organized by tle University of Botswana and 2 French Laboratories: GRER-ICT (Paris-Diderot) and CREA (Paris-Nanterre)

PRESENTATION

Southern Africa has been undergoing radical changes in social, economic and political terms since the beginning of decolonization. International interest has focused on the RSA, with its long apartheid period (1948-1990), which established race as the main identity marker in an attempt to maintain White supremacy. However the question of race and identity has been addressed throughout the world, though in very different ways.

At the same time, the other countries of Southern Africa were preoccupied with independence struggles, followed by nation-building strategies in the middle of multilingualism, multiculturalism and multiple ethnic identities. In a globalized world, that is to say in an interconnected space, with increasing interaction of people and a growing flow of goods, capital and digital data, with massive migrations inside Africa or between continents, race and identities have been redefined and viewed in new perspectives.

AXIS

Researchers are invited to send proposals on the following themes:

1.      Focusing on Botswana, with two subparts: ethnicity, identity and culture and the survival of Botswana amidst hostile settler regimes of Southern Africa

2.      Analytical and theoretical frameworks on intersectional and racial diversity.

Sociological, historical, political or linguistic contributions will be welcome.
