Transnational Narratives on Migration and Exile
June 3-4, 2019
University of Bergen

Over the recent years, issues of migration and exile have increasingly come to public attention, not only through the news and official reports, but they are also to a greater extent being documented through literary and aesthetic expressions such as texts, films and visual art projects like installations and photographs, offering visibility to the migrant situation and related issues. These representations are interesting aesthetic documents in their own right, and they also offer an important intake to the understanding the experience of migration and exile. In addition, they intersect with the recent reconsideration of questions related to mobilities and exile due to changes in migration patterns that is taking place across a range of disciplines, as well as a renewed scholarly interest in these expressions. The objective of this interdisciplinary seminar is to examine transnational narratives that represent, discuss and problematize these issues.

We welcome contributions that explore aesthetic expressions across genres and media, including textile art, photography, installation art, literary, film and other aesthetic narratives that represent or discuss questions related to migration and exile.
PhD students and young researchers interested in migrant narratives and aesthetic practices related to exile and migration are particularly welcome.

Contributions may address the following questions, but other approaches are also welcome:
- In what way can aesthetic expressions related to the experience of exile and migration be material carriers of memory?
- How do literary and aesthetic representations of the experience of migration and exile contribute to the construction of transcultural memory?
- To what extent do contemporary narratives of exile and migration share recurring
patterns of formal and thematic characteristics?
- In what way is multilingualism in various forms connected with key issues such as
belonging, mobility and identity in the representation of migration and exile?
- How does the navigation between different cultures expose, question and renegotiate norms of gender and sexuality?
- What are the effects of the spatial and linguistic recontextualization of language and
gender identity that occur in many transcultural representations, and to what extent
are they parallel phenomena?
- Can visual narratives of exile and migration question issues like authenticity, cultural
encounters and cultural memory by drawing intertextually on different media?

The seminar language is English.
